New Home Planning Applications Hit High Level

Updated: October 10, 2025

Nationally, the number of new homes applied for in planning applications in Q3 of 2025 increased by 68% against Q3 of 2024 – 58,929 against 39,794. By the end of September, applications are up 50% when compared with last year, outperforming the entirety of 2023*. This appears to provide the evidence that the Government drive for more housing has been received positively by the housebuilding industry.

Goadsby Director of Planning Peter Atfield states: “Despite the good news, there remain challenges to ensure that development targets are met. To the end of June, 29,000 dwellings were granted planning permission in 2025 – a record low. It will be hard work, and a test of the resources of local planning authorities, to deliver these planning applications and see spades in the ground.”
